IP CAMERA MORE THAN 100 METERS FROM THE NETWORK CABINET? EXPLORE PROSCEND LONG-REACH PoE SOLUTIONS
In large-scale surveillance systems, the distance between IP cameras and network cabinets can present challenges for data transmission and power delivery. PROSCEND’s Industrial Long-Reach PoE solution offers an option for extending Ethernet connectivity beyond the conventional 100-meter limit, while supporting the reuse of existing cabling infrastructure and simplifying the deployment of IP cameras at remote locations.

Three key factors to assess when selecting a suitable connectivity and PoE power solution for long-distance IP cameras.
When Distance Becomes a Challenge in IP Camera Deployment
In security surveillance projects at factories, industrial parks, warehouses, transportation facilities, and urban infrastructure sites, IP cameras are typically installed across multiple areas to meet monitoring and management requirements. Locations such as entrances, perimeter fences, outdoor areas, and distributed monitoring points may be hundreds of meters away from the control room and central network cabinet.
However, conventional copper-based Ethernet connections generally have a channel-length limit of 100 meters. When the distance between an IP camera and the network cabinet exceeds this limit, system integrators (SIs) must consider transmission extension options while ensuring adequate power delivery and stable operation of devices at remote endpoints.
In many cases, installing intermediate switches, deploying fiber-optic cabling, or providing a separate power supply near the camera can meet technical requirements. However, these approaches may introduce additional construction, equipment installation, and maintenance work, particularly at sites with existing UTP or coaxial cabling.
To address these challenges, PROSCEND Industrial Long-Reach PoE offers an alternative worth considering. It enables extended Ethernet data transmission and PoE power delivery over suitable cabling infrastructure, helping simplify the deployment and upgrade of surveillance systems.

Three key factors to assess when selecting a suitable connectivity and PoE power solution for long-distance IP cameras.
Key Considerations When Deploying IP Cameras Over Long Distances
Extending IP camera connectivity involves more than increasing transmission distance. It also requires alignment among infrastructure conditions, power requirements, and the operational needs of the overall system. For system integrators, evaluating these factors during the design stage provides a foundation for selecting an appropriate connectivity solution.
First, transmission distance and existing cable type are essential considerations. While new projects can select cabling routes from the outset, upgrade projects often need to reuse installed cabling to minimize structural modifications. Accordingly, identifying cable-run length, transmission-line quality, and the potential to reuse existing infrastructure is important when evaluating a solution.
Power availability at the camera location must also be assessed. For devices installed far from the network cabinet, providing a separate power supply may increase installation and management complexity. Combining data transmission and PoE power delivery over the same cable can help simplify the connectivity architecture when the device’s technical requirements are met.
In addition to distance and power availability, data rate and available PoE power must be evaluated together. As cable length increases, transmission speed and delivered power may decrease depending on deployment conditions. Solution selection should therefore be based on bandwidth requirements, camera power consumption, cable characteristics, and actual environmental conditions, rather than solely on the published maximum distance.

PROSCEND Industrial Long-Reach PoE – Extending Ethernet Connectivity Beyond the 100-Meter Limit
To address the need to connect IP devices at remote locations, PROSCEND developed Industrial Long-Reach PoE, a solution that supports Ethernet data transmission and PoE power delivery over UTP or coaxial cables at distances beyond the conventional Ethernet limit.
A notable advantage is its ability to reuse suitable existing cabling infrastructure, giving system integrators additional options for new deployments or IP camera system upgrades. PROSCEND offers different connection configurations depending on cable type, device count, and project requirements.
Extending Ethernet Connectivity Up to 800 Meters over UTP Cable
In the Point-to-Point UTP Extension configuration, the PROSCEND 701EPI and 101EPI device pair supports Ethernet data transmission and PoE power delivery over UTP cable at a published maximum distance of up to 800 meters, subject to deployment conditions.
In this configuration, the remote 101EPI unit can deliver IEEE 802.3at PoE power to a compatible IP camera without requiring a separate power supply at the installation point, provided the power and transmission requirements are met.
This solution is worth considering for cameras installed at entrances, perimeter fences, or monitoring areas far from the central network cabinet, where installing a local power supply may be inconvenient.
Reusing Coaxial Cable to Extend Connectivity Up to 1,000 Meters
For facilities with existing coaxial cabling, PROSCEND offers Point-to-Point Coaxial Extension using the 701CPI and 101CPI device pair, supporting Ethernet data transmission and PoE power delivery at a published maximum distance of up to 1,000 meters.
This is an option worth considering when upgrading surveillance systems from analog cameras to IP cameras. If the existing coaxial infrastructure meets technical requirements, reusing the cable can reduce the need to replace the entire transmission network. This gives integrators another option when modernizing camera systems, particularly at sites where construction is complex or cabling changes are difficult.
Extending Connectivity for Multiple Distributed Cameras
In addition to point-to-point configurations, PROSCEND provides Point-to-Multipoint UTP Extension using the 708EPI-DC industrial switch, which integrates eight Long-Reach PoE ports and supports connections to 101EPI devices at remote locations. This configuration enables multiple links from one industrial switch to distributed camera points, with supported distances of up to 800 meters on each suitable link.
For surveillance systems with cameras distributed across different areas, this solution provides an option for a more centralized connectivity architecture. Deployment planning must nevertheless account for each cable run, the total power budget, and device bandwidth requirements.
Beyond Distance Extension – Supporting Remote IP Camera Fault Management and Troubleshooting
In distributed surveillance systems, maintaining IP camera availability is as important as transmission distance. When a device becomes unresponsive or a cable link fails, on-site inspection can increase troubleshooting time, particularly at remote installation points.
Beyond Ethernet extension, PROSCEND supports Link Fault Pass-Through (LFPT) on compatible 701/101 device pairs. This mechanism propagates transmission-link fault status toward the network equipment, helping enable fault detection and monitoring.
When used with a compatible PROSCEND managed switch and the O’smart RAM (Remote Access Management System), administrators can monitor connection status, receive fault alerts, and perform certain remote troubleshooting operations.
In supported configurations, disabling and re-enabling the relevant Ethernet port can trigger a PoE power cycle to restart an unresponsive IP camera. In certain situations, this capability may reduce the need to dispatch technicians to the site and support more efficient surveillance system management.

PROSCEND Long-Reach PoE supports extended connectivity and power delivery for IP cameras across various surveillance systems while enabling the reuse of suitable existing cabling.
Applications of Long-Reach PoE in Industrial Surveillance Systems
With its extended transmission reach and support for IP camera power delivery, PROSCEND Industrial Long-Reach PoE can be considered in various deployment environments, especially where surveillance devices are distributed across multiple locations.
In factories and industrial parks, cameras are often installed along perimeter fences, at entrances, in warehouses, or in areas far from the control room. Long-Reach PoE can help extend connectivity to these monitoring points without necessarily requiring a separate power supply at every location.
For projects upgrading analog camera systems to IP, the potential to reuse suitable existing coaxial cabling is an important consideration. Rather than replacing the entire cabling infrastructure, integrators can evaluate Ethernet extension over the transmission infrastructure already in place.
In transportation and outdoor infrastructure, IP cameras are often deployed along roads, at facilities, or across distributed monitoring locations. Long-Reach PoE can help meet data transmission and power delivery requirements at remote points, depending on cable conditions and system requirements.
In particular, for facilities with construction restrictions or limited opportunities to install new cable runs, reusing existing infrastructure gives system integrators an additional deployment option to evaluate.
